Permanent Account Number is a ten-digit alphanumeric number, issued in the form of a laminated card or in electronic format, by the Income Tax Department, to any “person” who applies for it or to whom the department allots the number without an application. It enables the department to link all transactions of the “person” with the department. These transactions include tax payments, TDS/TCS credits, returns of income, specified transactions, correspondence, and so on. It acts as an identifier for the “person” with the tax department.

It is mandatory to quote PAN on return of income, all correspondence with any income tax authority. Since 1st January 2005 it has become mandatory to quote Permanent Account Number on challans for any tax payments.

Yes, applicants should affix their recent color photographs (size 3.5 cm x 2.5 cm) in the space provided on the top corners of the form. The photograph should not be stapled or clipped to the form. The applicant should sign across the photograph (preferably in black ink) on the left-hand side of the form and sign (preferably in black ink) in the box provided below the photograph on the right-hand side of the form. In such cases, Left Hand Thumb Impression (preferably in black ink) of the applicant should be taken on form at the place meant for signature. This should be attested by a Magistrate or a Notary Public or a Gazetted Officer, under official seal and stamp.
